Ecommerce - Managing Promotions
The standard promotions can be:
- valid for all orders, or only when general criteria are met (e.g. more than N items, more than X euro)
- be of a fixed amount (€20) or percent (20%)
- be valid until a certain date
- each coupon can be set to be used a fixed number of times in total (e.g. the first 100 customers) or unlimited
- each coupon can be set to be used for a fixed number of uses for each single customer (e.g. valid for 1 order, or 2 orders) or unlimited
This is all already available and requires no implementation. If you need some different logic (e.g. “valid only if one buys product A with product B”) then we need to overwrite the standard modules and implement the custom logic.
1. In KK create the Promotion, under Marketing > Promotion
The promotion sets the terms:
- type: use order total discount
- start and end date: as preferred. The end date is not included, so if you want the campaign to be valid up to the 20th Feb included, set end date to 21st Feb
- state: set enable
- requires coupon: tick yes, otherwise the discount will apply to anyone.
Be very careful not to forget this off. - cumulative: no, but not an issue if all campaigns require coupons
- max usage: how many times this promotion can be used by each user (as identified by his email/registration). -1 means unlimited
- all user max usage: how many times this promotion can be used in total by all users. -1 means unlimited
- description: for internal use only
- min order value/quantity: set 0 and 1 for no limits
- min quantity for a product: doesn’t apply
- discount: numeric value, e.g. 10
- type: % (then it’s 10%) or amount (then it’s £10)
- apply discount: no effect for % discounts, while for fix-amounts it means that £10 includes or not the VAT
Once this is done, click on Save.
2. Create the coupon code(s)
With the right promotion selected, click on Coupons
Max usage is how many times the coupon can be used by anyone, -1 means unlimited. The two typical cases are:
- nominal coupons (e.g. code hellojohnsmith): the coupon will only be shared with a specific person, set max usage to the number of uses the customer can have
- cumulative coupons (e.g. code summer2020): the coupon will be shared with a number of people. Set the max usage to -1, the promotion limits would still apply. If the coupon is set for a max number of uses, it will work only for the first customers.
Note: coupons must always be associated to a promotion. So either you create them from the promotion, as said above, or first they are created and then they are associated to an existing promotion.
